Former Hearts and Hibernian striker Kris Boyd has said that Pedro Caixinha’s time at Rangers could be up if the club lose their upcoming fixtures over the next few weeks.

The Light Blues have two very important games this week, travelling first to Firhill on Tuesday to face Partick Thistle in the Scottish League Cup quarter-final.

This is followed by the Gers’ first Old Firm meeting of the season as Caixinha’s side host Celtic at Ibrox on Saturday in the Premiership.

Rangers have had mixed results this season and Boyd believes that consistency is key to Caixinha remaining in the Ibrox job.

“It’s a huge week, it could be a defining week for Pedro Caixinha, a massive couple of games coming up,” the BBC pundit said on Sportsround.

“All season long, since the start of the league campaign, Pedro Caixinha has really needed to try and build up a head of steam and get some consistency in results and he hasn’t been able to do it.

“In the next week he has two huge games that if he’s able to win both of them, then all the doubts get parked to one side and people really start to believe that he has got longevity in the job.

“If he’s to lose both of them, then it could be terminal. I don’t think he would be sacked within days or a week or whatever but it would be a case of when rather than if he was to go.”

OPINION

Kris Boyd is on the right lines with his assessment of Pedro Caixinha, as things could quickly turn sour at the club if the manager loses the next two matches this week. And especially if Rangers get hammered by Celtic like they did in their last Premiership encounter. It’s hard to say which match is more important for the club as Tuesday’s clash will see his side move forward to the semi-finals, whereas a victory over their rivals at home would be of huge significance in the title race.
