Kris Commons claimed that Celtic are a “million miles away” from Rangers after securing a 2-0 win at the home of their bitter rivals on Saturday.

Second-half goals from Tom Rogic and Leigh Griffiths extended the Hoops’ unbeaten domestic run to a remarkable 57 matches.

It also lifted them five points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table as they chase a seventh consecutive title, and eight points ahead of Rangers.

Commons insisted in his post-match analysis of the Old Firm clash on the Sky Sports Football channel that the gap between the two clubs is huge as he highlighted the statistics which showed Celtic had 18 goal attempts, seven of which were on target, while Rangers had just six attempts, with only one on target.

Asked how far Rangers are from Celtic, the former Hoops playmaker said: “Million miles away. It seemed an even game in the first 45 minutes but the stats don’t lie, and the stats from the last game are exactly the same.

“The big question before the game was, can Rangers get near to Celtic? Can they bridge the gap? On that evidence it appeared they did but the stats show they are still a million miles away.”

OPINION

Commons is correct. The gulf between Rangers and Celtic remains significant enough to give Caixinha sleepless nights for weeks to come. Brendan Rodgers’ men played within themselves in the opening period, when there was little between the two sides, but their quality shone bright and clearly after the break. The second goal, created brilliantly by Patrick Roberts and finished with surgical precision by Griffiths, was something that Rangers could only dream of emulating.
