Eddie Gray believes that Leeds United manager Thomas Christiansen will have ripped into his players at half-time against Ipswich for overplaying at the back.

The Whites continued their impressive start to the season on Saturday as they marinated their position at the top of the Championship table with a narrow 3-2 home win.

The Yorkshire giants were made to work hard by a competitive Ipswich side, but goals from Pierre-Michel Lasogga, Kalvin Phillips and a Bartosz Bialkowski own goal secured the points.

Leeds may have picked up another three points, but Gray feels the manager will have been concerned about some of their work at the back.

“I think he [Christiansen] will have had words with them at half-time for trying to overplay a little bit defensively, but in general he will be happy with the game,”

Leeds were without the rested centre-back Pontus Jansson against Ipswich and youngster Conor Shaughnessy came in as his replacement.

The Whites have been playing out from the back a lot more since Christiansen’s summer arrival, with goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald capable in possession.

However, Gray believes the Leeds back-line may have been criticised by the manager during the game.

OPINION

Leeds do look an improved side under Christiansen so far this season and have shown the possession-based side of their game, but will also have to win ugly if they are to obtain promotion. The impressive home form is something that is already reaping the rewards, but on the road they can’t afford to take risks in defence. Leeds face two big away matches against Cardiff and Sheffield Wednesday in their upcoming fixtures, where they will have to take a no-nonsense approach to be successful.
