Leeds United defender Liam Cooper is set to be called up to the Scotland squad in October, according to Sky Sports.

It is understood that the 26-year-old will be named in Gordon Strachan’s squad ahead of the crucial World Cup qualifiers against Slovakia and Slovenia.

The report details that the centre-back is expected to included in the Scotland squad and is line to win his first international cap.

Cooper has twice been named in the Scotland squad in the past, but is still awaiting his first appearance for his nation.

He missed out on the most recent squad, but Strachan is set to reward him for a brilliant start to the new campaign.

The powerhouse defender has begun the season in great form and has looked a different player under Thomas Christiansen.

The Leeds captain has taken his game up another gear and been an ever-present in the starting line-up.

Cooper has formed a formidable partnership alongside teammate Pontus Jansson at centre-back and the duo are one of the best combinations in the division.

Leeds are currently top of the league table and their defensive resilience is a key ingredient behind the early success.

OPINION

In-form Leeds defender certainly deserves a chance to feature for Scotland next month, but the matches against Slovakia and Slovenia will determine if they reach the World Cup qualifiers. International manager are constantly moaned at for not selecting players based on form, but Strachan is set to do just that by drafting in the Whites centre-back. Cooper has the quality to compete alongside Christophe Berra, Charlie Mulgrew and Grant Hanley for a place in the Scotland XI. He has shown he can play out from the back with his performances at Elland Road and could be a success if he can replicate his form on the international stage.
