Everton player ratings v Atalanta

|

Goalkeeper and defenders

Maarten Stekelenburg 7 – Everton fans couldn’t work out why Jordan Pickford was dropped but Stekelenburg is more than capable of deputising and giving Koeman’s No.1 a rest. Made a brilliant save from Masiello but then conceded straight from the resulting corner after some sloppy defending. Made another crucial save in the 33rd minute from the same man and couldn’t do anything about the stunning second, or the third, goal. Everton’s best player – and that sums the game up.

Leighton Baines 5 – Looked like a completely different player to the one that we’re used to seeing bombing down the flanks. Kept things fairly quiet down his side but offered nothing in attack.

Mason Holgate 5 – Holgate had the hardest job of any of the Everton defenders, having to handle the dangerous Alejandro Gomez. He did it reasonably well, but could have done better for the Argentine’s goal.

Phil Jagielka 5 – He was on the bench for the Tottenham game and he provided the only glimpses of solidity in the Everton defence. And those glimpses were very few and far between. We can’t really call him the best defender, maybe the least worst?

Michael Keane 4 – Really, really poor from the 24-year-old, who looked completely outclassed by the mid-table Serie A players.
