Everton lost 3-0 to Atalanta in the Europa League on Thursday and Toffees fans destroyed midfielder Mo Besic after a shocking performance.
Ronald Koeman and the 2,500-odd Everton fans that made the trip to Italy had to endure one of the worst performances from their team in recent memory.
They were up against a middling Serie A team, who lie 13th in the league and hadn’t played in Europe for 26 years.
As it was, they controlled the game from start to finish, looking stronger, sharper, more inventive – and the final score could have been worse.
Everton have aspirations of breaking into the top four of the Premier League, but that seems a long, long way away after a performance that left you feeling sorry for the fans that had made the trip.
Aside from stand-in goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg, none of the Everton players performed well tonight, but one player was singled out for criticism after a shocking first-half display.
And it didn’t get much better in the second half for the 25-year-old midfielder.
Mo Besic looked out of place, sloppy, uninterested and off the pace – and Everton fans were quick to let him know what they thought of him.
