OPINION

Leeds are reportedly leading the race to sign Astana striker Junior Kabananga.

TeamTalk claim that the Whites are frontrunners ahead of Nottingham Forest and Hull to land the 28-year-old.

It is understood that Kazakhstan top-flight club Astana are yet to receive any bids for the forward and that he is valued around £1.5million.

Good move for Leeds?

Kabananga is a proven goalscorer and has some pedigree, playing 16 times at international level with Congo and competing in the Champions League too.

The striker is currently involved in Champions League qualifications with Astana and Scottish giants Celtic are their last hurdle before the group stages.

Chris Wood is the main forward at Elland Road and that seems unlikely to change whoever comes in.

However, Kabananga would provide much stiffer competition for a starting spot and be an upgrade on the likes of Marcus Antonsson and Souleymane Doukara.

He has shown great form for Astana during his stay there and scored 27 goals in 73 appearances.

Likely to happen?

Leeds already have several attacking options in their squad and it seems unlikely that someone will arrive unless somebody leaves.

Kabananga also has the chance to reach the Champions League group stages for the second time in his career and is playing at a high level.

It could be considered a drop down to the Championship from Astana and a step backwards in his career.

Leeds have shown they would be willing to pay the £1.5million asking price already this summer, but it seems they are focusing on defensive reinforcement before the close of the window.
