OPINION

Tottenham forward Vincent Janssen is reportedly being targeted by Ligue 1 club Marseille.

The Mirror claimed on their transfer blog (9:38pm, Monday 7th) that the French side are searching for a new striker this summer and have switched their attention to Janssen after a deal for Inter Milan’s Stevan Jovetic stalled.

It is understood that Spurs are prepared to offload the 23-year-old just 12 months after signing him from AZ Alkmaar.

The report details that Lazio have also expressed an interest in Janssen about a potential loan move, but the north London club would only be willing to accept a permanent sale.

Good move for Spurs?

Maurico Pochettino already has a thin squad at his disposal and should certainly keep Janssen at the club.

The Holland international did enjoy a nightmare first season and scored scored six goals in just 38 appearances.

However, he should glimpses of his qualities with some nice hold-up play and deserves to be given another shot to impress in the new campaign.

Spurs also can’t afford to get rid of the striker as that would leave Harry Kane as the only recognised senior forward, although versatile attacker Heung-Min Son could also be deployed.

It makes no sense to axe Janssen from the squad as they can’t hope to achieve anything with just one striker.

Likely to happen?

Spurs fans got behind Janssen last season despite his struggles and it seems likely he will get another year to prove his worth.

They did fork out £17million to secure his services last summer and it doesn’t appear they are prepared to spend big in this transfer window.

Marseille would give Janssen the chance to reignite his career and look to rediscover his prolific goalscoring form, but there are still high hopes for him at Spurs and they will need him as part of their squad in the new campaign.
