Scotland wide forward Gary Mackay-Steven has signed for Premiership runners-up Aberdeen after Celtic agreed to his departure, it has been confirmed.

The Hoops announced on their official Twitter account and website on Wednesday evening that the 26-year-old had departed Glasgow and agreed a two-year deal with Derek McInnes’ Dons.

Mackay-Steven’s departure brings the end of a two-year career at Parkhead after joining in January 2015 in a deal worth £250,000 from Dundee United.

The one-time capped Scotsman struggled to recapture the same form at Parkhead that saw him originally make the move and after 63 appearances for the Hoops, returning 10 goals and 11 assists he will now be looking to help Aberdeen challenge Celtic at the top.

There were 30 points between the two sides in the top positions last season with the Hoops completing the campaign unbeaten with 34 victories from their 38 matches.

Aberdeen, meanwhile managed to finish nine points ahead of Rangers in second and that brought much joy to the watching Celtic fan base.

McInnes’ side will now be looking to repeat last season’s success and after selling star winger Jonny Hayes to Celtic earlier in the summer they will now be hoping for Mackay-Steven to take up his role in the team and help push them further.
