Monk prepared to bide time to sign Green

Middlesbrough manager Garry Monk will monitor where Rob Green figures in the Leeds United pecking order before making a move to sign him, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

The regional newspaper claim Monk is keen on signing Green if he loses his place as the United number one to new signing Felix Wiedwald.

The German, 27, was signed from Werder Bremen for around £500,000 last Friday after signing a three-year contract.

He is the fourth goalkeeper at Elland Road and will compete with Green, who started all 46 of Leeds’ Championship matches last season, for a starting place under new boss Thomas Christiansen.

The Yorkshire Evening Post report that the keeper pecking order ahead of the 2017-18 league campaign will become clear as the club’s pre-season friendlies play out this month.

Any developments in Monk’s bid to re-sign Green, 37, are likely to take place after that point as the summer transfer window remains open until the end of August, which gives plenty of time for any possible deal

The former England international had a shaky start after moving to Elland Road last summer on a free transfer but was one of Leeds’ outstanding players in the second half of the season as they mounted a strong promotion challenge before finishing seventh in the Championship.

Marco Silvestri and Bailey Peacock-Farrell are also on Leeds’ books but the latter is expected to go out on loan and the deal could be sealed on Wednesday.
