Celtic bracing themselves for Armstrong bids

|

Premier League side Southampton have joined the battle for Celtic star Stuart Armstrong, whose future at the club is “hanging in the balance”, according to the Scottish Sun.

The south coast club have had some success with purchasing from the Hoops in recent years with Fraser Forster, Virgil van Dijk and Victor Wanyama all becoming huge successes in England.

Armstrong could now be the next and it is said that the 25-year-old has so far refused terms of a new contract with his current deal set to expire next summer.

This could force Celtic into selling the two-time Scotland international this summer to avoid losing him on a free next year.

Premier League duo West Brom and Brighton are also said to have been monitoring the situation of Armstrong in Glasgow.

The technically gifted midfielder made the switch to Parkhead from Dundee United in February 2015 alongside teammate Gary Mackay-Steven.

He had a troublesome opening few months at the club, but after last summer appointment Brendan Rodgers decided to play him in a more central role he excelled and played a key part in the treble winning side with 17 goals and seven assists from 47 matches in all competitions.

A move south of the border and to the Premier League may now be enticing to the Scotsman who has so far spent his career in Scotland.
