Rangers would more than halve the 39-point gap that separated them from Old Firm rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership last season with the signing of Hoops icon Aiden McGeady.

Transfer expert Alan Nixon claimed in his Sun column on Sunday (page 63) that the 31-year-old would be allowed to leave Everton, with relegated Premier League side Sunderland willing to pay a chunk of his £45,000-a-week wages.

It is reported that the fleet-footed winger could become Simon Grayson’s first summer signing at the Stadium of Light, after the duo combined last season at Preston which saw McGeady shine for the Lilywhites.

Pedro Caixinha has completed eight summer signings already in Bruno Alves, Fabio Cardoso, Ryan Jack, Carlos Pena, Dalcio, Daniel Candeias, Eduardo Herrera and Alfredo Morelos, but McGeady would trump all of those.

This Is Futbol explores three ways in which McGeady would prove to be a huge transfer coup in Caixinha’s side ahead of the 2017-18 campaign as Rangers look to claw in their Old Firm rivals.
