Former Chelsea captain John Terry is set to become an Aston Villa player on Monday, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claims that the 36-year-old has opened formal discussions with the Championship side and he is hopeful that negotiations can be finalised over the weekend so he can meet up with his new teammates who will be training in Portugal on Monday.

The report claims that the former England international was considering retirement but Villa manager Steve Bruce managed to persuade him to keep on playing for at least one more season.

It is said that the defender will put pen to paper on a one year contract worth £4million, including bonuses, whilst Villa might still offer him an extra year.

Premier League clubs Bournemouth, Swansea City and West Bromwich Albion were all reportedly interested in landing the veteran but Terry was not keen on facing his former club.

It is reported that the defender has already started taking his coaching badges but he is fully concentrated on helping the Midlands club achieve promotion back to the Premier League next season.

It will be a new experience for Terry as he has never competed in the second tier of English football throughout his entire footballing career.

The Englishman is set to be Villa’s first signing of the summer.
