Newcastle United defender Grant Hanley has been informed that he is unlikely to feature for the club next season, according to the Chronicle.

The newspaper claims that the newly-promoted Premier League side are attempting to offload the 25-year-old before the start of the upcoming campaign.

The report claims that Championship side Sheffield Wednesday are prepared to spend around £5.6million for the defender and the Magpies are willing to accept if Hanley is interested in returning to the second tier of English football.

This follows up from the story in the Sheffield Star which reported that the Owls had already approached Newcastle about the availability of the central defender this summer.

The Chronicle reports that Hanley is not the only player who is set to be shown the door as Newcastle are willing to sell Achraf Lazaar, Curtis Good, Henri Saivet and Emmanuel Riviere for the right offer during the summer transfer window.

Hanley signed for Newcastle at the start of last season but he endured a tough debut campaign as he spent the majority of the campaign watching on from the sidelines.

The Scotland international only managed to feature in 16 matches in all competitions but he helped the team to keep seven clean sheets in the process.

The defender’s current contract at St James’ Park expires in 2021.
