Championship side Sheffield Wednesday have made a move to sign Newcastle United defender Grant Hanley this summer, according to the Sheffield Star.

The newspaper claim Wednesday manager Carlos Carvalhal is looking to have more defensive options next season and he believes that the 25-year-old defender would be a great addition to the squad.

The Sheffield Star report that the Championship club have already made an approach to Newcastle about signing Hanley and are weighing up tabling a formal bid.

This is not the first time that Wednesday have shown interest in the Scottish defender as they reportedly tried to sign him during the last summer transfer window.

It is reported that Newcastle are looking to sign two more central defenders this summer as they prepare for their first season back in the Premier League since the 2015-16 campaign.

The Chronicle also claims that the Magpies are willing to let Hanley leave the club this summer for a fee around £5million.

This story follows up from the report in the Chronicle which claimed that Championship club Derby County had cooled their interest in Hanley after signing defender Curtis Davies from Hull City.

The Scotland international did not enjoy a great debut campaign at St James’ Park as he only made a total of 16 appearances in all competitions last season.

Hanley’s current contract at Newcastle runs out in 2021 and he is reportedly earning £45,000-a-week at St James’ Park so it will not be easy task for the Championship side to acquire his services this summer.
