Leeds United have agreed to sign Spanish midfielder Madger Gomes – and fans have taken to Twitter to express their approval.

The Championship club announced on their official website and academy Twitter account on Tuesday that they have taken advantage of Gomes’ availability after Liverpool announced that he will be released when his contract expires this weekend.

Central midfielder Gomes, 20, has signed a three-year deal with Leeds and is looking forward to making his mark with the youth team before vying for a first-team spot.

The Leeds faithful are delighted that a player who has spent three years at the Liverpool academy will be at Elland Road next season.

Gomes’ arrival comes at a time of radical change on and off the pitch at the club, and fans are enjoying the pan-European transfer policy.

This Is Futbol has rounded up some of the best tweets:

Former Spain Under-18 international Gomes joined the Liverpool academy in 2014 when he was 17 after leaving Spanish club Villarreal, where he had been a contemporary of Sergi Canos and Pedro Chirivella, both of whom have played for the first team at Anfield.

Gomes, who made five appearances in Premier League 2 for Liverpool’s Under-23s last season, will initially link up with Leeds’ development squad with a view to training with Thomas Christiansen’s first team.

Speaking about the move, Gomes told the United website: “I’m really excited and happy to start life with Leeds United, I hope to have a good season here.

“Hopefully I will get a chance to progress and make the first team as my dream is to play professionally.”

Leeds have been active in the transfer market since Christiansen was appointed as manager 12 days ago.

They have signed midfielder Mateusz Klich from FC Twente for around £1.5million and have been strongly linked with Spanish forward Sami Saiz and Lugano winger Esgjan Alioski.
