Leeds have lost the race to Millwall for right-back Conor McLaughlin due to playing time, according to reliable journalist Alan Nixon.

Sun correspondent Nixon claimed over the weekend that the Yorkshire giants were lurking around the 25-year-old soon to be free agent.

However, Millwall boss Neil Harris also told London News Online that his club are in talks with the Fleetwood full-back, whose contract ends on Friday.

Nixon himself reported via his personal Twitter account on Tuesday that Millwall had “won” the race for McLaughlin and when a fan asked why he had picked the Lions over clubs such as Leeds, the Sun journalist simply responded “playing time.”

McLaughlin played in 49 matches in all competitions for League One side Fleetwood last season, returning five goals and two assists and the right-back is now keen to progress his career.

Leeds are already covered in the full-back position with last summer signing Luke Ayling proving to be an instant hit, while Gaetano Berardi can also play there.

Ayling is almost certain to have been above McLaughlin in Thomas Christiansen’s pecking order and this could have helped the 23-time capped Norther Ireland international make the decision to choose the recently promoted Millwall as his next destination
