Rangers’ head of academy Craig Mulholland believes Robert McCrorie’s loan to Berwick Rangers will be critical to his development.

Berwick announced on their official club website and Twitter account on Saturday morning that the 19-year-old goalkeeper had signed for the club on a season-long loan.

McCrorie was a mainstay in Rangers’ Under-20 side last term, but has been allowed to join the Scottish League Two outfit in order to further his development.

Mulholland revealed in an interview with the official Rangers website that he has plans for all the young players on the club’s books, and the move is seen as the next stage of McCrorie’s career.

“We have player transition strategies in place for all Academy players trying to make the transition from the Academy to the first team,” he said.

“Robby is in line with his projections based on Under-20s appearances, international appearances and now his first loan to play first team football is important.

“His strategy over the next two years will see Robby join a part-time club for his first loan as this crucially allows him to work with our first team on at least four days every week, which is a critical part of his development at this stage.”

The 19-year-old made 33 appearances in all competitions for the Gers Under-20s outfit last season, as reported by the Glasgow Evening Times.

He featured twice for the side in the Challenge Cup, which saw him keep a clean sheet in the 4-0 win over Stirling University, but he let in three goals in the 3-1 defeat to Stenhousemuir in the second round.

McCrorie has appeared on the bench for his club’s senior side, but he is yet to fully break into the first team squad at Ibrox.

The youngster has been capped by Scotland Under-19s on 12 occasions, and he most recently featured in the 2-1 European Under-19s Championship qualifying defeat to Hungary in March of this year.
