William Gallas believes Tottenham need to add experience to their squad if they are to succeed in the Champions League.

The former Premier League player feels that Mauricio Pochettino’s side struggled in Europe’s biggest club competition last term because of their “young” squad.

Spurs, who were playing their Champions League home encounters at Wembley, were knocked out of the group stages after winning only two of their six matches.

They then suffered the same fate when Belgian side Gent knocked them out of the last-16 stages of the Europa League, with Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United going on to win that competition.

Tottenham finished the 2016/17 Premier League campaign by securing the runners-up spot, with their London rivals Chelsea going on to win the title.

Upon their return to the Champions League next term, where they will be playing home matches at Wembley again, Gallas offered his thoughts on what his former club needs to do in order to do well.

“It was a big shame what happened to them last season but this Tottenham squad is a little too young for the Champions League,” said Gallas, as quoted by the Daily Star.

“Against Monaco and Bayer Leverkusen in the group games, it showed that they needed more experience.

“The Champions League is different to the Premier League. You need experience, you need to be more clever and stay focused.”

The likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli have been key players for Pochettino in recent seasons but it was the first time the duo were playing in Europe last term.

Added with that, academy product Harry Winks was often used to come off the bench but Spurs couldn’t transform their league form into the Champions League as they only beat CSKA Moscow, both home and away.
