Charlie Adam has revealed that former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson was an inspirational figure during his time at the club and made him a better footballer.

The 31-year-old played for the SPL side during the early part of his footballing career, enjoying six years at Ibrox.

Adam made 76 appearances in all competitions for the club, scoring 15 goals and providing 10 assists.

The midfielder played alongside Ferguson for two-and-a-half seasons at Rangers and both men played their part in helping the club reach the UEFA Cup final 2008.

Speaking with online website Open Goal, Adam revealed that his fellow Scotsman used to berate him constantly during his time at Rangers but he admitted that it played a key role in his development as a football player.

“Fergie was at me every day and he probably wanted the best out of me but I always feel he was quite hard on me,” he said.

“But I respected him as a player because I thought he was a wonderful player for Rangers

“Of course it did [make me a better player]. I try and do that myself with younger players but you always fear that you’re probably moaning at them.”

Ferguson enjoyed two successful spells with Rangers during his 11 years at the club.

During his first spell at Ibrox, Ferguson won nine major trophies with the club and he captained the side that secured the domestic treble during the 2002-03 campaign.

He returned to Rangers after a brief spell playing for Birmingham City and he picked up another six trophies including two SPL titles, two Scottish Cup trophies and two Scottish League Cups.

Ferguson left Rangers at the end of the 2008-09 campaign before deciding to hang up his boots in 2014.
