Rangers legend Lorenzo Amoruso has claimed Bruno Alves’ experience will be vital for his former club next season.

Alves became Gers manager Pedro Caixinha’s first signing of the summer last month when he completed a switch from Cagliari.

In an interview with the Scottish Sun, Amoruso said the 35-year-old centre-back will play a big role for the Glasgow giants next term

“I watched Bruno for Cagliari last season and although he is getting older, his body is in good shape,” he said.

“He is a strong defender. He is very good in the air and I think he will enjoy the physical nature of Scottish football.

“His experience will be vital for Rangers. They need someone strong at the back and he is a leader.

“Bruno has been at top clubs in his career and he will be a big influence inside the dressing-room. The players will look up to him and I think it was a wise move from Caixinha to sign him.”

Alves was a mainstay of Cagliari’s back line last term, playing 37 league and cup games, scoring one goal.

The 35-year-old is a true veteran having played more than 50 Champions League games for the likes of Fenerbahce, Porto and Zenit St Petersburg.

He has a superb footballing CV having won four league titles with Porto, a further two at Zenit and one during his stint in Turkey with Fenerbahce.

The Portuguese defender is one of eight new faces that Caixinha has brought in this summer, as Ryan Jack, Fabio Cardoso, Dalcio, Daniel Candeias, Eduardo Herrera, Alfredo Morelos and Carlos Pena have all also joined the Ibrox club.

Alves has also been capped on 92 occasions by Portugal, and he played the full 90 minutes of the side’s 4-0 Confederations Cup win over New Zealand on Saturday.

He was also a part of his nation’s 2016 European Championships winning side.
