Manchester United have completed the signing of Benfica defender Victor Lindelof, it has been confirmed.

The Premier League giants announced on their official club website on Wednesday evening that the 22-year-old had put pen-to-paper on a four-year contract, with an option of a further year at Old Trafford.

Lindelof, who has been capped 12 times by the Sweden international side, becomes the club’s first summer signing after a prolonged transfer saga.

The 2016-17 Europa League champions did not stipulate an exact transfer fee, but it was claimed by the Daily Mail less than 24 hours prior to the announcement that Lindelof would fetch a £30.7million fee.

It was also claimed that Red Devils chief Jose Mourinho had been chasing the defender throughout much of the most recent campaign, and had begun working on a deal during the winter transfer window.

United had revealed on their official website on Saturday that they had agreed a fee with Benfica, but the deal has now been confirmed after the centre-back passed a medical at the club’s Carrington base.

Lindelof made 47 appearances in all competitions for Portuguese giants Benfica last season, including in all eight of their Champions League fixtures as they were eliminated in the knockout-stages.

He arrived in Portugal back in December 2011 from Swedish outfit Vasteras SK, enduring three years of hard-graft before earning a regular role in the first-team squad.

But the Swede now also has an opportunity to showcase his talents on the Premier League stage, after sealing his long-awaited move to England’s top tier.
