Shilton: Signing Pickford for £30million is cheap

|

Legendary England goalkeeper Peter Shilton believes that Everton’s potential signing of goalkeeper Jordan Pickford for £30million is a great piece of business.

This comes after Sky Sports News HQ confirmed on their official Twitter account on Tuesday morning that the Toffees had reached an agreement with Sunderland to sign the 23-year-old goalkeeper for £30million this summer.

Pickford is set to become the most expensive goalkeeper in the history of British football once the deal is complete.

The young Englishman would become the third most expensive goalkeeper in the history of the game, behind Juventus stalwart Gianluigi Buffon and new Manchester City recruit Ederson.

Pickford would also become the most expensive signing in Everton’s history, ahead of striker Romelu Lukaku who signed for £28million in 2014.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live, Shilton believes that it is a fantastic deal for both the club and the player and he is adamant that the goalkeeper is worth every penny.

“This sort of money should be spent on goalkeepers,” he said.

“For someone like Jordan, who is young and has great potential, it does not seem a great fee.

“In the big scheme of things it is not a lot of money, considering how important the goalkeeping position is.”

The former England international knows all about the pressures of living up to the price tag as he became the most expensive goalkeeper in the world in 1974 when he signed for Stoke City from Leicester City for £325,000.

Although he was involved in a Sunderland side who were relegated, Pickford produced some outstanding displays last season, making a total of 135 saves in the Premier League.
