Spaniard set to join Leeds as Christiansen No2

Spaniard Julio Banuelos is set to join Leeds United as the club’s new assistant manager, according to the Siete Semanal.

The Spanish publication claim that the 46-year-old is on his way to Elland Road to continue his well-established coaching relationship with manager Thomas Christiansen.

The Denmark-born former Spain international was a surprise appointment by Leeds as the successor to Garry Monk on Thursday after impressing owner Andrea Radrizzani during his interview.

Siete Semanal report that Christiansen will name Banuelos as his number two after they worked together at Cypriot clubs APOEL Nicosia and AEK Larnaca in the last three years.

The arrival of the former manager continues the radical overhaul at Leeds and almost certainly spells the end for Pep Clotet, who was Monk’s assistant in 2016-17 at Elland Road but has not followed him to Middlesbrough,

Banuelos was once on the books of Real Madrid during his playing days but did not make the grade and spent most of his career in the lower leagues of Spanish football with Mirandes and in the Real Zaragoza B side.

As a manager, Banuelos has had two spells at Alaves and demonstrated his calibre by securing promotions in the lower leagues in Spain at Mirandes and Burgos.

He was appointed Christiansen’s number two at AEK Larnaca in 2014 and then followed him when he was appointed at APOEL two years later.
