Monk recommended Leeds sign Klich

Garry Monk recommended that Leeds United should sign midfielder Mateusz Klich when he was the club’s manager, according to Sky Sports.

The broadcaster claimed on their website on Thursday that Klich is undergoing a medical at Leeds ahead of sealing a permanent transfer from Dutch club FC Twente.

Sky Sports report that the Yorkshire giants have been tracking the Poland international, 27, since Monk identified him as a target last summer shortly before his move from German second-tier side Kaiserlautern to Twente.

Klich made a big impact at the Dutch Eredivisie side last season, chipping in with six goals and four assists from a central midfield role, and Leeds have made a concerted push to sign him under new manager Thomas Christiansen.

The former Spain forward was appointed last Thursday as Monk’s successor and is set to make Klich his first signing for a fee of around £1.5million after the terms of the deal were agreed.

Monk was appointed by Middlesbrough two weeks ago after handing in his resignation at Elland Road.

Klich, who has accumulated 10 Poland caps, is set to join the likes of Liam Bridcutt, Ronaldo Vieira, Eunan O’Kane and Kalvin Phillips in the battle for central midfield places next season.

He began his career at Cracovia in Poland before a move to Wolfsburg in 2011. He was then sent out on loan to PEC Zwolle on two occasions before joining Kaiserslautern in 2015.
