English Championship club Sheffield United are lining-up a loan-to-buy deal for Celtic attacker Gary Mackay-Steven, according to the Daily Record.

The report details that the Blades have been attracted to the 26-year-old left-winger, but Brendan Rodgers’ side could command a hefty price for the wide player who still has two years left on his contract at Parkhead.

This has led to the report stating that if Sheffield United can not reach the figure that Celtic want then it is understood the Yorkshire side will move for an initial loan agreement with a view to purchase in January or next summer.

Mackay-Steven joined Celtic back in February 2015 in a £250,000 deal from Dundee United with current star Stuart Armstrong heading in the same direction in a separate deal.

He has since gone on to feature 63 times for the Scottish giants, scoring 10 goals while also providing 11 himself, helping the club to three Premiership titles and a Scottish League Cup.

However, since Rodgers’ appointment last summer he has played just 11 times in all competitions for Celtic with his last league start coming all the way back on March 1 in a 4-0 victory over Inverness.

It is clear that Mackay-Steven will have to move away from Celtic if he wants more first team football and a transfer to a progressive side such as Sheffield United could prove tempting.
