Monk kept out of loop on Leeds summer transfers

|

Garry Monk quit as Leeds United manager after the club lined up summer transfers behind his back, according to Sky Sports.

The broadcaster have claimed in a report on their website that their sources have learned that the Yorkshire giants were making plans without the knowledge of Monk and it contributed to him tendering his resignation.

Sky claim the 38-year-old was kept “out of the loop” on key areas such as transfers in and out of Leeds this summer as well as the appointment of new directors.

Monk responded by handing in his notice on Thursday morning after holding two rounds of talks with new sole owner Andrea Radrizzani earlier this week.

Radrizzani has claimed on social media that he had hoped to agree a three-year deal with Monk and was “shocked” and “disappointed” that he had quit.

In turn, the former Swansea manager released a statement on Thursday night in which he claimed it had been his intention to stay at Leeds for many years but he could not strike a deal with Radrizzani.

Monk did not divulge the details of what was the sticking point in negotiations but Sky report that he was privately unconvinced that the Italian owner was willing to go any further than activate the 12-month extension clause in his contract due to expire next week.

Former Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka is the early bookmakers’ favourite to taking over at Leeds, and there is also speculation that another Spaniard who has recently quit the Riverside Stadium, recruitment guru Victor Orta, is on the verge of agreeing a deal to become the club’s new technical director.
