Leeds United have approached Walter Mazzarri about becoming their new manager, according to a reliable journalist.

Sky Sports Italy correspondent Gianluca Di Marzio has claimed on his personal website that the Championship club have contacted Mazzarri, 55, about his interest in taking over at Elland Road.

Di Marzio reports that Mazzarri, who was sacked by Watford at the end of the Premier League season, is not interested in managing a Championship club next season.

He is mulling over his options after attracting a number of offers in recent days, with English top-flight outfit Crystal Palace and Spanish team Celta Vigo joining clubs from the United Arab Emirates in taking steps to entice the Italian.

Former Napoli and Inter Milan boss Mazzarri has a sound reputation despite being dismissed by Watford after steering the club to Premier League safety with a 17th-place finish, one place and six points above the drop zone.

Former midfielder Mazzarri had never managed outside of his native Italy before he took the reins at Watford last summer.

He is said to be keen for another post overseas and is not looking to return to Serie A.

The Di Marzio report comes after Monk delivered his bombshell resignation to Leeds on Thursday morning.

Leeds announced on their official website on Thursday afternoon that Monk had quit after making it clear he did not want to discuss a long-term contract with the club.

Monk’s current deal was due to end next week but Leeds had the option to extend it by a further 12 months.

The former Swansea manager has left Elland Road with his reputation enhanced after steering the club to a seventh-place Championship finish after taking over a team that had ended the season between 13th and 15th in each of the previous five years.
