Kevin Wimmer could end his Tottenham nightmare by returning to former side Koln this summer, according to German newspaper Bild.

The Austria international has become somewhat of a forgotten man at Spurs after failing to feature since February 26 with Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier all preferred ahead of the 24-year-old.

The report claims Bundesliga outfit Koln attempted to sign Wimmer on loan in January but missed out and decided to bring in Borussia Dortmund stopper Neven Subotic on a temporary basis until the end of the season.

Now, with Subotic returning to his parent club, it is believed Koln could look to reignite their interest in the Spurs ace just two years after selling him to Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

The Daily Star claims Wimmer is set to leave Spurs as the north London outfit are looking to bring Hull defender Harry Maguire, but face competition from Everton, West Brom, Southampton, West Ham and Newcastle.

Wimmer made just 10 appearances in all competitions for Spurs this season, with only five of those coming in the Premier League.

Since his £5million move to White Hart Lane in the summer of 2015, Wimmer has made just 31 appearances for Tottenham’s first team in two years and could look to get his career back on track with a return to Koln.

However, it remains to be seen if Spurs are both willing to sell the defender and how much they would charge for him, with more than four years still to run on his current contract.
