Former Leeds manager director David Haigh has urged his old side to replace manager Garry Monk with Claudio Ranieri.

Monk, 38, resigned as Leeds manager earlier this week after talks over a new contract with Italian owner Andrea Radrizzani failed to reach an agreement.

The Daily Star revealed on Saturday that the Yorkshire giants had approached Premier League winner Ranieri over filling the vacancy in the Elland Road dugout, after being sacked by Leicester earlier this year.

Haigh, who lasted as managing director for just over a year with the Championship club, claimed on his personal Twitter account that bringing in Italian boss Ranieri would be a “good sign for the future.”

Former Swansea boss Monk took Leeds to within a whisker of the Championship play-offs after moving to Yorkshire in July 2016, despite remaining in the top six for five months between November 2016 and April 2017.

However, Leeds failed to earn a shot at ending their 13-year stay below the Premier League and now they are without the manager that gave fans reason to dream of a potential return.

Former Chelsea, Juventus and Monaco manager Ranieri brings with him a wealth of experience after beginning his managerial career 31 years ago in 1986 with Italian minnows Vigor Lamezia.

The 65-year-old is best known for last season’s heroics with Leicester, that saw the Foxes defy odds of 5000/1 to hold aloft the Premier League trophy.

Now, the Italian could be set to join the 17th team of his managerial career in the second division of English football with Radrizzani’s Leeds.
