Italian gaffer expecting transfer bids for 26-goal Arsenal & Chelsea target

Gonzalo Higuain

According to reports from The Daily Star, Napoli manager Maurizio Sarri is expecting to receive bids for Arsenal and Chelsea strike target Gonzalo Higuain during the summer transfer window.

The Argentina international has been in phenomenal form this season, netting 26 times across all competitions to bring his career total to 240 goals in 489 appearances – spanning spells with River Plate, Real Madrid, the Naples outfit and Albiceleste.

Arsenal are known long-term admirers of the 28-year-old, almost signing him during summer 2013, whilst Chelsea reportedly came close to agreeing a £40million deal during the January transfer window. The Daily Star document interest from the Premier League rivals once again.

And according to the British tabloid – who cite The Daily Mail – Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri has now admitted the Serie A outfit are expecting bids for their star striker during the summer transfer window.

As quoted by both sources, he said; “I do not read the rumours and I do not know anything, but I think there will be even more offers than from those clubs. Maybe he’ll want to respond to these rumours and answer his critics, but I don’t understand how anyone can find fault in a player who has scored 26 goals this season and shown he is a genuine star.”

Napoli are clearly reluctant to sell Higuain. Last summer, they publicly insisted any suitor would have to activate his £67million release clause. But now verging upon the final two years of his contract and running out of time to ply his trade with another elite side, a lucrative departure in the summer could suit both the club and the player.
