Lucas Biglia

According to reports from Calcio Mercato, Lazio midfielder Lucas Biglia will be staying on at the Stadio Olimpico until at least the end of the season.

The Argentina international, who represented his country in the 2014 World Cup final, has been no stranger to the Premier League’s rumour columns over the last few years. Even in the last few weeks, reports have suggested Liverpool and Manchester United are targeting the 29-year-old ahead of the January transfer window, whilst Inter Milan and Real Madrid represent mooted suitors from Serie A and La Liga.

Widespread interest in Biglia stems from two predominant factors. First of all, the South American has been one of the most consistent midfielders in Serie A since his 2013 arrival from Anderlecht and is enjoying yet another strong season, finding three goals and one assist in eight league outings whilst averaging 3.4 tackles, 2.4 interceptions and 2.1 created chances per match. Secondly, Lazio want to extend his contract past summer 2018 but the experienced midfielder has continually refused, casting serious doubts over his future in the Italian capital.

But according to Calcio Mercato, who cite fellow Italian outlet Corriere Dello Sport, Biglia won’t be on the move in the coming transfer window. They report talks between the midfielder and Lazio sporting director Igli Tare yesterday evening, where the pair discussed their wishes and ambitions, and agreed that he’ll stay on at Stadio Olimpico until at least the end of the season.

Whether Liverpool or Manchester United will still be interested in a midfielder who will have turned 30 by the summer transfer window, remains to be seen.
