4. Gonzalo Higuain

According to reports from The Express and Mirror Football yesterday morning, Liverpool are preparing a January transfer window swoop for Napoli front-man Gonzalo Higuain.

The Argentina international, who featured prominently for his country at the 2014 World Cup and this summer’s Copa America, boasts an impressive 59 goals in 110 appearances for the Italian outfit – including a return of five goals in seven Serie A outings this season.

There was plenty of Premier League interest in the former Real Madrid man, who won three La Liga titles and netted 122 times with Los Blancos, during the summer – with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United all linked in August.

However, no bid materialised as an official club statement in July claimed any potential suitor would have to activate the 27 year-old’s £67million release clause.

According to The Express and Mirror Football, however, who both cite Spanish publication Fichajes, Liverpool are now considering a January swoop for Higuain following their goal-shy start to the season. Only Newcastle United, Watford and West Brom have scored less than the Reds’ eight Premier League goals this term.

The British newspapers both allege that Arsenal are likely to be Liverpool’s biggest competitors in the race to sign the South American striker, who almost joined the Emirates ranks in summer 2013. Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott have performed well this season but the Gunners still lack a top class centre-forward of Higuain’s variety.

Despite Napoli’s insistences otherwise during the summer, Fichajes claim the Serie A side would sell for around €45million – perhaps due to their current position of sixth in the league table.
