According to reports from The Express this afternoon, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was put off launching a bid for Anthony Martial this summer because he thought the Manchester United signing was ‘unsellable’.
The teenage sensation has made an emphatic start to his Red Devils career after arriving at Old Trafford for an initial £36million on summer deadline day, scoring three times from just five efforts at goal to become United’s top scorer in the Premier League.
Gunners gaffer Arsene Wenger has already been rather outspoken about the move, which made the 19 year-old the most expensive teenager in the world, revealing last month that it was in fact worth £58million when including performance-related bonuses such as winning the Ballon d’Or.
Arsenal face Manchester United in a heavyweight clash at the Emirates this Sunday and the issue of Martial’s availability whilst at Monaco arose during the Frenchman’s pre-match press conference.
As reported by The Express, he said; “Anthony Martial was not sellable. He was not on the list. He was one of the players Monaco didn’t want to sell so we never made any approach for him. United managed to do it because they paid special money.”
Judging on Wenger’s transfer activity over the last decade, it’s unlikely he would have matched United’s bid even if he’d been aware of the France international’s availability.
