According to reports from The Daily Mail this morning, Manchester United tried ‘at all costs’ to sign Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller during the summer transfer window.

Keen to enhance his striking options following the sale of Robin van Persie to Fenerbahce, Louis van Gaal is believed to have courted a number of coveted front-men during the summer, including Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema and Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane.

But his priority target was Thomas Muller, the German international who bagged 10 goals during the last two World Cups and helped fire Bayern Munich to the Champions League title in 2013. His overall return for the Bundesliga champs is 129 goals in 314 appearances.

According to The Mail, ‘super agent’ Giovanni Branchini has claimed the Red Devils tried ‘at all costs’ to bring the 26 year-old, famed for his versatility, industriousness, physicality and netting prowess, to Old Trafford this summer.

In a Q&A with Italian publication Calcio Mercato, he said; “Manchester United wanted Thomas Muller at all costs. I’ve spent days trying to explain Bayern Munich would never let him leave – so in the end they changed their mind.”

The Daily Mail mention rumours of a £71million bid. But reports earlier this month suggest United could have in fact seen an offer of £88million – trumping the world-record transfer fee currently held by Gareth Bale – rejected by the Bavarians.
