According to reports from Mirror Football this morning, Manchester United saw an £88million bid for Thomas Muller rejected by Bayern Munich during the summer.

Keen to enhance his striking options following the sale of Robin van Persie to Fenerbahce, Louis van Gaal is believed to have courted a number of coveted front-men during the transfer window, including Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema and Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane.

But his priority target was Thomas Muller, the German international who bagged 10 goals during the last two World Cups and is famed for his rather unique blend of industriousness, versatility and netting prowess.

United’s previous £73million bid for the 6 foot 1 forward, who the van Gaal promoted to the Bayern first team during his spell as Allianz Arena boss, was already public knowledge.

But according to Mirror Football, who cite German publication Bild, United’s second attempt to sign the 25 year-old saw them table an £88million offer – eclipsing the world-record fee Real Madrid paid for former Tottenham star Gareth Bale in summer 2013.

The bid was rejected by the Bavarians but after launching such a monolithic bid, Manchester United’s pursuit of Muller looks set to continue into the next few transfer windows.
