According to reports from The Daily Star this afternoon, Chelsea were chasing Liverpool striker Christian Benteke during the summer transfer window but eventually signed Radamel Falcao instead.

The Belgium international moved to Anfield for a £32.5million fee in July after bagging an impressive 49 goals in 100 appearances for Aston Villa. He’s since produced two goals in six Premier League outings for Liverpool, but has missed the best part of the last month with a hamstring injury.

According to The Star, who cite reports from The Telegraph, Liverpool weren’t the only major English club keen to sign the 6 foot 3 striker during the summer.

They claim Manchester United were also interested along with Premier League champions Chelsea, who ended up signing former Old Trafford flop Radamel Falcao on loan from Monaco instead.

The Colombian international managed just four goals with the Red Devils last term and has endured a similarly poor run of form with the Premier League champions, netting just once in seven outings – although six have come from the bench.

The Telegraph claim the 29 year-old may resultantly ask to leave Stamford Bridge in January if Jose Mourinho continues to keep him on the sidelines.
