According to reports from South London Press this morning, former Arsenal and Liverpool star Jermaine Pennant has failed to secure a contract at Charlton Athletic.
Pennant was regarded as one of the brightest prospects in English football when the Gunners signed him as a 15 year-old from Notts County in 1999, costing £2million – a then-record fee for a trainee.
But he managed just 12 Premier League appearances in six years and was eventually sold to Birmingham City, before signing for Liverpool in 2006 at a cost of £6.7million.
He featured for the Reds in the 2007 Champions League final but struggled to hold down a first team role, never surpassing the 34 Premier League appearances of his debut campaign, and left two years later.
The winger has since had spells with Real Zaragoza, Stoke City, Wolverhampton Wanderers, FC Pune City and Wigan Athletic, who he left at the end of last season upon the expiration of his contract as the Latics plummeted into League One.
He began training with Championship outfit Charlton Athletic in August with the view to earning a contract, but according to South London Press the Addicks have now decided against offering him one. Pennant’s next move remains to be seen.
