According to reports from The Daily Mail this evening, former Arsenal and Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant is currently on trial with Championship club Charlton Athletic.

Pennant was regarded as one of the brightest prospects in English football when the Gunners signed him as a 15 year-old from Notts County in 1999, costing £2million – a then-record fee for a trainee.

But he managed just 12 Premier League appearances in six years with the Emirates outfit and was eventually allowed to leave for Birmingham City, where he went on to earn a £6.7million move to Rafa Benitez’ Liverpool.

He featured for the Reds in the 2007 Champions League final but struggled to hold down a long-term first team role, leading to spells with Real Zaragoza, Stoke City, Wolverhampton Wanderers and most recently Wigan Athletic.

His contract with the Latics expired at the end of last season and according to The Daily Mail, he’s now training with South London club Charlton Athletic – with the view to a potential contract offer.
