Thibaut Courtois

According to reports from Mirror Football this afternoon, Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois will be sidelined for the next three months after undergoing surgery.

The Belgium international went under the knife on Thursday after tearing the meniscus in his right knee during a training session on Wednesday and manager Jose Mourinho has revealed he’ll be out of action for ‘quite a long time’.

As quoted by Mirror Football, who allege Chelsea will be without their No.1 for the next three months, the Blues boss said in his press conference earlier today; “Courtois was injured in a training session and as a consequence he will be out for quite a long time. I cannot be more specific about the injury and the time he will be out. I just know he will be out for some time. I wait for Dr Biosca to be more specific after [his] surgery.”

That will see £8million summer signing Asmir Begovic deputise in goal until Courtois is fit again in December, facing the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham in the Premier League and helping Chelsea advance from the Champions League’s Group Stage.

Mourinho has already backed the Bosnian international to successfully fill the void, stating; “It’s not easy to have the best goalkeeper in the world injured. But it is easy to have one of the best goalkeepers in the world to play. Begovic is very very good. I’m sad for Thibaut and sad for the team but we have a top goalkeeper and Begovic will be in goal.”

The 28 year-old will start between the sticks for Chelsea’s visit to Everton tomorrow, with kick-off at 12.45pm.
