According to reports from Manchester United’s official website, David De Gea is ready to start against Liverpool tomorrow after signing a four-year contract at Old Trafford.
The Spain international was tipped to join Real Madrid for much of the summer as his Red Devils contract entered it’s final twelve months. But a deal worth £29million and including Keylor Navas in exchange collapsed at the last minute as the required paperwork missed the La Liga window’s transfer deadline at 11pm on August 31st.
In a surprising twist of events, De Gea signed a new contract with United this afternoon, tying him down to four more years at Old Trafford and ending speculation over his future with the club.
According to quotes from Manchester United’s official website, the 24 year-old is keen to make his first Premier League start of the season against Liverpool tomorrow, having been excluded from Louis van Gaal’s previous match day squads whilst the Real Madrid transfer saga loomed over his head.
De Gea told MUTV in an exclusive interview; “I’ve trained really hard and I played with my national team, of course, so I feel ready and 100 per cent fit. It’s a perfect moment to come back at Old Trafford with the fans against Liverpool. It’s a special game for us, for the fans, for the world. It’s a big game and, of course, we need to win. We need three points for the fans.”
Whether Louis van Gaal is prepared to hand the Spaniard an immediate starting berth, however, remains to be seen. De Gea has been involved in just one competitive fixture this season – a Eur0 2016 Qualifer against Macedonia on Tuesday – and understudy Sergio Romero has kept three Premier League clean sheets in his absence.
