According to reports from The Independent this morning, Manchester United will launch a bid for Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane next summer.

The France international is widely regarded as one of the most exciting defensive prospects in European football, having already captained his national team and won the Champions League at just 22 years of age.

In fact, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho  – who brought Varane to the Bernabeu in summer 2011 – described him as ‘the best young defender in the world‘ 18 months ago.

The Stamford Bridge outfit reportedly made a ‘tentative approach‘ to sign the 6 foot 3 centre-half during the transfer window and are widely expected to return for him next summer, especially after missing out on Everton’s John Stones.

According to The Independent, however, Manchester United have made Varane one of their priority targets for next summer amid an arduous search for world-class additions to the heart their of defence. Real Madrid president Florentino Perez confirmed United’s interest in the former Lens youngster last week.

With both clubs seeking a long-term signing at centre-back and enriched by the Premier League’s £5.1billion TV rights deal that comes into effect next season, we could see a costly bidding war for the French prodigy during the summer.
