According to reports from Mirror Football this morning, Arsenal are considering a January swoop for Inter Milan forward Mauro Icardi following their goal-shy start to the season.

The north London outfit targeted Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema and PSG front-man Edinson Cavani during the summer but missed out on both; and the absence of a top-class centre-forward has been felt in their opening Premier League fixtures.

Indeed, just three sides had recorded less than the Gunners’ three league goals before this weekend’s round of fixtures, only one of which was scored by an actual Arsenal player – Olivier Giroud. Their other two strikes were own goals from Newcastle’s Fabricio Coloccini and Crystal Palace’s Damian Delaney.

And according to Mirror Football, the Emirates outfit could attempt to arrest the situation by launching a bid for Inter Milan’s Mauro Icardi in January.

The 22 year-old finished up as Serie A’s top scorer last season with 22 goals and was linked with Premier League duo Chelsea and Manchester United during the summer window – until he penned a four-year contract extension at the San Siro in June.

That hasn’t nullified the Gunners’ interest in the 5 foot 11 forward, according to the British tabloid. But if Inter’s strong start to the season continues – claiming back-to-back wins in Serie A – it seems unlikely the Argentina international will jump ship to the Emirates in the new year.
