Chelsea consider raising to £40m in defender race with Man United

John Stones

According to reports from The Guardian this afternoon, Chelsea are considering a fourth and final bid for Everton defender John Stones worth £40million.

The England international has emerged as the most sought-after centre-back in the Premier League this summer with Chelsea, United and City all linked to his signature over the last few weeks.

Chelsea have proved the most proactive in courting the 21 year-old thus far, although they fear Manchester United plan to hijack any potential deal in the final hour.

The Premier League champions have already seen three bids for Stones, the latest being worth £30million, rejected by the Goodison outfit – who continue to insist publicly that the 6 foot 2 centre-half won’t be allowed to leave this summer.

But reports this morning claimed the Toffees might be tempted to sell for £40million, decimating the Premier League’s record transfer fee for a defender and ensuring a £37million profit on the club’s original investment made just two-and-a-half years ago.

And according to The Guardian, Chelsea are now weighing up a bid for that precise sum following poor starts to the season from veteran defenders John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic. That would make Stones Jose Mourinho’s most expensive signing throughout his two spells at Stamford Bridge.

Christy Malyan, who knows better what Everton are intending to do than Roberto Martinez does. If Christy says the transfer is gonna happen then it will DEFO happen because he’s told us it’s gonna happen. Ad nauseam.
