According to reports from The Daily Mail yesterday afternoon, Juventus midfielder Andrea Pirlo is set to agree a move to the MLS.
The iconic playmaker has enjoyed an incredible career at both domestic and international level, winning two Champions League titles and two Serie A titles during his nine years at AC Milan, four consecutive Serie A titles with Juventus and the 2006 World Cup with the Italian national team.
He’s set to face Barcelona in this season’s Champions League final on Saturday – but at 36 years of age, it could prove to be his ultimate outing for the Old Lady.
Last month, Pirlo discussed the prospect of leaving Turin on the high of European silverware – even describing it as a ‘dream come true,’ as reported by talkSPORT.
That allegedly triggered interest from Premier League duo Liverpool and Chelsea – as This Is Futbol revealed last month.
But according to The Daily Mail, the three-time Serie A Player of the Year has all-but officially confirmed his agreed move to the MLS. He’ll join New York City FC, playing alongside Chelsea legend Frank Lampard and Spain’s all-time top scorer David Villa.
I’m disappointed to hear that, I was hoping Pirlo would carry on at the top level until the end of his career. At least we’ll finally get to see a Pirlo-Lampard midfield I suppose…
(N.B. Actually, doesn’t this mean he’ll technically be owned by Man City? Will we see another ‘loan-until-the-start-of-the-MLS-season’ farce like with Lampard this season?)
