Nathaniel Clyne

According to reports from The Express this morning, Southampton star Nathaniel Clyne has turned down Manchester United in favour of a move to northwest rivals Liverpool.

The 24 year-old has just come to the end of a strong campaign at St. Mary’s, playing a vital role in the Saints recording the second-best goals conceded column in the Premier League by averaging the fifth-most tackles per match, 3.3, of any player in the division.

That’s seen him break into the Three Lions’ starting Xi and attract interest from some of the Premier League’s top clubs, namely Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United – as This Is Futbol revealed in May.

Liverpool are believed to have made a second bid for Clyne after their £10million offer was rejected in May – as This Is Futbol revealed on Tuesday – and that persistence appears to have won the right-back over.

According to The Express, who cite The Sun, the former Crystal Palace has rejected Manchester United, paving the way for an Anfield switch instead.

There’s almost no question that Southampton will sell. In addition to Clyne’s continued reluctance to extend his contract past the end of next season, Ronald Koeman’s side have signed a replacement in Sporting Lisbon full-back Cedric Soares – as This Is Futbol revealed yesterday.

Liverpool and Southampton are yet to agree a fee for Clyne, but it’s believed the latter’s valuation is around the £15million mark.
