According to reports from The Liverpool Echo this afternoon, PSV director Marcel Brands has revealed Liverpool are ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign star forward Memphis Depay.

The Netherlands international has been in sensational form since his nomination for the Best Young Player award at last summer’s World Cup, going on to record 27 goals in 38 appearances this season.

That includes 21 strikes in the Eredivisie, firing PSV to their first title since 2008 and the 21 year-old to the top of the division’s scoring charts.

Due to the Louis van Gaal connection, via the Oranje set up, it was previously believed United were the firm front-runners in the race for the £25million-rated winger-forward, as This Is Futbol revealed last month.

But Sporting Director Marcel Brands has refuted such rumours regarding Depay’s next club – declaring Liverpool and PSG to be leading the pack instead.

“PSG and Liverpool are indeed a step ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign Memphis. United have only informed us about their interest,” Brands told Fox Sports.

“The list of interested clubs has grown in recent weeks. But Bayern Munich are not among the teams that want to sign him,” he added.
