Why Manchester United are RIGHT to chase this £30m sensation:

For a while now, The Red Devils have been picking up links to Benfica star, Nicola Gaitan. The Argentine ace is well thought of on the European scene, but he’s yet to play in a major European league. Perhaps Manchester United could change this in the near future?

According to The Express, Louis Van Gaal has been interested in the 26-year-old since the summer. Now it looks like United winger Angel Di Maria is trying to make a move happen. The source suggests that ‘Di Maria believes his compatriot might be just the player United need in midfield’.

Of course, Di Maria will know Gaitan well, as they’re both Argentina internationals (although the Benfica star only has 9 caps). If he thinks that he’s good enough to make an impact at the top level of the Premier League then it must be with good reason.

Liverpool, Tottenham, Monaco and Valencia are also thought to be interested. This is yet further evidence that this is a player that’s worth pursuing.

With Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young producing diminishing returns and Nani currently plying his trade in the Primeira Liga, this certainly looks like an area that could use some investment.

The aforementioned source suggests that there’s a £30m release clause written into Nicolas Gaitan’s Benfica contract. That’s a decent amount of cash, but it’s probably fair market value for a player of his experience and ability.

He’s never been a natural goal-scorer (he’s only got 27 goals in 187 games for his current club), but he has plenty more to offer. He’s an excellent dribbler who exudes confidence on the ball. He’s also great at drifting into dangerous areas and distributing the ball well. He’s the kind of player who can make things happen in the final third.

With all this in mind, perhaps Louis Van Gaal would do well to heed Angel Di Maria’s advice here. Nicolas Gaitan isn’t a cheap player, but he’s one who could improve Manchester United’s squad in a meaningful fashion.
