Have Arsenal MISSED their shot to sign Sami Khedira?

Sami KhediraFor a long while now, Arsenal have been linked to Real Madrid’s midfield battler, Sami Khedira. At one stage in the summer a move looked like a sure thing. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be.

I think it’s fair to say that The Gunners have suffered as a result. One of the things they’ve really missed this season is strength in the centre of the park. Sure, Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta keep possession nicely, but do they do enough to win the ball back, or break up play? I’m not so sure.

Bringing in a player like Sami Khedira could be just the ticket. Unfortunately, according to The Metro, such a move is now looking rather unlikely.

Khedira’s Real Madrid contract is set to expire in the summer, when he’ll be available as a free transfer. Some fans may have been hoping that Arsene Wenger would snap him up on the cheap this January.

But it looks like the big German has other ideas. Check out these recent comments from him: “If we can reach a solution [over a new contract], I’ll be very happy.”

This isn’t good news for The Gunners. After all, if he signs a deal with his current pay-masters, his price-tag is set to rise right up. Arsene Wenger will probably need to look elsewhere.

Still, he hasn’t signed a new deal yet, so there’s still hope. With the January transfer window now officially open, The Gunners can attempt to tempt Khedira away with an offer of a big contract. Perhaps they can also use the likes of Per Mertesacker, Mesut Ozil and Lukas Podolski (if he’s still at the club) as bait.

Either way, Arsene Wenger shouldn’t give up on this deal just yet. Khedira has the profile, ability level and experience necessary to excel in the Premier League. I would love to see him strut his stuff in an Arsenal shirt.

What’s your take? Is Sami Khedira still a viable option for The Gunners?
