BaleManchester United are currently ‘enjoying’ a season of ups and downs, but I’m sure fans will have been overjoyed to have seen the following article get published in British newspapers: according to The Express (and other sources), Real Madrid are willing to sell Gareth Bale this summer. What’s more, Old Trafford could end up being the Welshman’s next location.

That’s right, the same Gareth Bale that Real Madrid spent a shed-load of cash on two summers ago. The same Gareth Bale that used to make waves at White Hart Lane. The same Gareth Bale that is widely regarded as being one of the best midfielders in world football.

Why on earth would Real Madrid want to let him go? Has Carlo Ancelotti lost his marbles?

Well, according to the aforementioned source, Carlo Ancelotti has set his sights on Borussia Dortmund sensation, Marco Reus. I’d argue that the German whizz isn’t quite as good as Bale, but he’s still a fantastic talent. What’s more, with his current contractual situation, there’s a good chance that he’ll be available at a bargain price next summer.

It’s thought that Reus would cost as little as £20m (that’s a bargain, relatively speaking). The Express also claims that a Manchester United deal for Bale could cost as much as £120m. It looks like Ancelotti could turn a tidy £100m profit here, without losing too much quality. That strikes me as a good piece of business.

Still, this would be quite a statement of intent on the part of Manchester United and Louis Van Gaal. Spending £120m is a big deal, no matter how you try to twist it. Bale will add pace, technique and goals to The Red Devils’ front line. Since moving to The Bernabeu, he’s scored 33 goals in 66 games.

He may be living in Cristiano Ronaldo’s shadow, but he’s still producing the goods on a regular basis. He’s one of the few players in the world that may actually be able to justify having a £120m price-tag.

So why shouldn’t Manchester United dream big and make it happen? If it gets them back into contention next year, it’ll have been worth it.

What’s your take? Could The Red Devils really sign Gareth Bale?
